Facing Death

Regardless of the rise in popularity of zombies and vampires in recent years, the world has not been overtaken by the un-dead. Quite the opposite, in fact. The world is populated by living people who fear death. Death, or even aging, are processes people go to great lengths to avoid; just think of the plethora of anti-wrinkle or “rejuvenation” treatment ads in your favorite magazine. The truth is, however, that all of us will die. No time is this more evident than today, Ash Wednesday.

Today is the day we are reminded that we are dust, and to dust we shall return. Today, there is no possibility of outlasting death. Today, emblazoned with ashes, we begin our Lenten journey to the cross.
